All praise and thanks are expressed to Allah SWT for his permission, the new website for Faculty of Maritime Studies (FMS), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has been published. We hope this website provides useful information and guidance and can be fully utilized.
UMT supports the national higher education aspirations contained in the Malaysian Education Development Plan (PPPM) 2015-2025 in realizing PPPM’s first spike in producing holistic, entrepreneurial and balanced students. Therefore, degrees in maritime and maritime niche are synonymous as UMT is the only Public Institution of Higher Education offering this program in Malaysia. To be clear, recent economic, political and technological changes (IR4.0) have accelerated developments in the maritime industry, both internationally and nationally. To meet the changing demands of the maritime industry and the needs of future skilled workers, FMS offers fields that focus on maritime and nautical science and have the potential to offer quality academic programs at both First and Postgraduate levels based on the field of ‘Marine and Aquatic Sciences’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG); Ensuring quality education, inmusif and fair and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all (SDG 4) and safeguarding and conserving the beaches and marine resources for sustainable development (Life on the Sea) (SDG 14).
In the era of the country’s rapid industrial development, maritime industries such as sea transport, ports and marine tourism have also played an important role. In addition to shipping, transport and port related services, other direct and indirect support services include logistics, warehousing, shipping services agents, freight forwarding, marine insurance, maritime law, international bank affairs , boat brokers, wharfs, warehouses, haulages and others are able to provide high employment offers in this sector. As such, FMS has taken steps towards Industry-based learning where, the Work Based Learning (WBL) implementation program at Tanjung Pelepas and Kuantan Port for the Bachelor of Management (Maritime) program was implemented to provide students with the opportunity to build industry experience at two leading ports in Malaysia.
The Maritime Bachelor of Science (Nautical and Transportation Science) program has also been recognized by the Marine Department and have received Watch Keeping Officer (WKO) accreditation this year. FMS also has the Malaysian Maritime Logistics and Transport Center (MaLTraC), which is Malaysia’s first maritime transport and logistics center dedicated to being a reference and education hub for data collection related to maritime transport. A Nautical Science Laboratory and Maritime Community Laboratory were created to assist Students in IR4.0 based learning as the center is equipped with the latest learning simulator facilities. The availability of these facilities will help to increase professional human capital in the field of maritime education, thus enhancing the marketability of the UMT graduate market.
Lastly, I hope that students can plan their academic studies wisely, keep up to date, and work hard to achieve excellence,
All the best and good luck!
